Mena Suvari Mena Adrienne Suvari was born on 9 February, 1978 in Newport, Rhode Island to Episcopalian parents Candice, a nurse and Ando, a retired psychiatrist. Mena was named after her British godmother, who was herself named after the House of Mena Hotel, which is situated near the pyramids in the Valley of the Kings, in Egypt. Her last name, Suvari is Estonian, derived from a river in Estonia. Mena, who has three older brothers, Sulev, AJ and Yuri, attended middle school in South Carolina at the Ashley Hall Girls School, and high school in Burbank, California at Providence High School. When Mena was thirteen, she got her first taste of acting in a Rice-a-Roni commercial. At the age of nineteen, she was in her first film, called "Nowhere", about a group of high schoolers living strange lives in Los Angeles. In 1997, Mena appeared in the movie "Kiss the Girls", starring Ashley Judd. "Kiss the Girls" was a small hit, she soon was cast in a bigger role in the film "Slums of Beverley Hills" in 1998. This was a critically acclaimed film and also starred Natasha Lyonne, who would appear with Mena later in "American Pie". In 1999, Mena appeared in the sequel to the movie "Carrie" in "Carrie 2: The Rage". She played a teenager who commits suicide by jumping off the high school building. Later in 1999, Mena was kept busy with two phenomenal roles in "American Pie" and "American Beauty", which won five Oscars, gaining her a huge fan base. She appeared in the teen flick "Loser" in 2000, alongside her co-star in "American Pie", Jason Biggs. It was also in 2000, on March 18, that Mena married her long-time boyfriend Robert Brinkman, a 38 year old cinematographer! Mena's next movies for 2001 are "Sugar and Spice", in which she plays Kansas, in a black comedy about a popular high school cheerleader who becomes pregnant with the star quarterback's child, only finds herself turning to crime to support the lifestyle she wants to live.
